In a transformative development, Google and the European Commission are set to create a cooperative framework for establishing regulations on Artificial Intelligence (AI). According to a Reuters report, Thierry Breton, the European Commission’s industry chief, announced on Wednesday their collaboration with Alphabet to shape a voluntary pact outlining AI’s basic rules. This crucial partnership provides Google an opportunity to contribute while avoiding potential pitfalls. It’s an alignment of entities with European companies and those from other global regions, reinforcing the EU’s historical reputation for stringent tech regulations.
A Precursor to EU’s AI Act
This collaborative agreement seeks to establish guidelines ahead of the formal AI Act proposed by the EU. Breton, in a statement, emphasized the urgency to create an AI pact on a voluntary basis before the regulatory enactment. In a parallel development, Margrethe Vestager, EU tech chief, affirmed the federation’s intent to set minimum AI standards in partnership with the United States. The aim is to reach a consensus on regulation text by 2023, creating a transitional bridge until the regulations come into effect.
